The National Museum of Prehistory, located in the town of Eyzies-de-Tayac in the Dordogne, was established in 1918 by Denis Peyrony. It is housed in the former Tayac Castle, to which modern extensions have been added to fit out the museum spaces.

The national Museum of Prehistory offers a complete approach of the Palaeolithic, first activities(occupations) of hunters-gatherers in Aquitaine (-500 000 years), up to the end of glacial time (-10 000 years): stone tools, works of art in bone or from ivory, sculptures, full-scale reconstructions.
