About the location

Lascaux II
488 chemin de la Grotte, 24290 Montignac-Lascaux
  • Dordogne
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
Lascaux II is the exact three-dimensional copy of the Lascaux cave, closed to the public since 1963\. Thanks to a technological prowess hitherto unheard of, it was a question of transmitting to the people of today messages dating back 17,000 years and of restoring to humanity a part of the common heritage that had become inaccessible. The two galleries reproduced are the Salle des Taureaux and the Diverticul Axial, which collect 90% of Lascaux’s paintings. The work carried out by the plastic artists in the 70s reproduces the paintings to the nearest centimetre, perfectly renders the volume of the original cavity, the relief of the walls, and even more astonishing, the epidermis of the rock. Lascaux II opened on 18 July 1983.
