Guided tour of the village
Once a mere deviation from the very large parish of Bricquebec, the village of L'Etang-Bertrand became an autonomous commune only in 1895. Since the Middle Ages, however, this small village had acquired a certain importance; it had fairs and shops, gathered around the large bridge crossing the Ouve and its two mills food and craft activities. The proposed visit will begin in the local church with a summary of the village’s history, economic and religious life. It will then continue with a presentation of the great medieval causeway and the bridge of the Etang-Bertrand, probably one of the oldest constructions of this type preserved in Cotentin. After having mentioned the fisheries and tanneries that were associated with this beautiful work of art, we will also try to observe the different houses of the village, whether they are old houses of bourgeois and Renaissance craftsmen or small farmhouses of the eighteenth century, often very well preserved and still presenting many original architectural details.
