Guided tour of the lime kiln
The lime kiln of the Grandes Carrières in Huberville is located in the north of the town, on a private land made available to the association. This is the last cottage production structure still in elevation on the communal territory. It is neither classified nor listed under the Historical Monuments. Classified among medium-sized ovens, this is the only example of this type recorded in the Valognais bocage sector. Unlike the Surtainville kiln with similar technical and morphological characteristics, but smaller and probably intended for the production of lime for private use, that of Huberville had sufficient production capacity for the local lime trade. In addition, with that of Gonneville, it is one of the few in North Cotentin to have kept its metal grille (made with sections of railway rails and recycled trolley wheel bandages) and the sole that supported the load, as well as the metal C-arms framing the round-headed side openings. The municipal archives have no record of its history. Although present in a generally correct state of conservation, the invasion of the vegetation constituted a serious threat to the integrity of the masonry and the general stability of the building. Its release and restoration undertaken since 2015 by the Association for the Safeguarding of the Built and Natural Heritage of Huberville have helped to save it and to finally be able to present it to the public this year. The reception and the guided tours will be provided by the volunteers of the association who worked to save it. They will take place as the public arrives, without a specific time. Access markings will allow those who wish to discover it in complete freedom and security. Discovery aids (explanations, photographs, etc.) will be made available.
