Guided tour of the sailboat "The Red Wolf"
THE RED WOLF is a sailboat of 11.28m (37 feet) and the 7th Maïca à voute launched by CMN in 1962. It’s a testament to what was probably the best sailing pleasure boat in the early 1960s: • It’s a 37-foot Ocean Racer designed by architects Illingworth & Primrose for a dual racing and cruising program. John Illingworth, creator of the Sydney-Hobarth race, was one of the pioneers of offshore racing after World War II. • It was built in moulded wood (3 layers of Grand Bassam mahogany) following a technique derived from aeronautics and the construction of minesweepers. • Its slender shape, woodwork and teak bridge combine refined design with exceptional performance. • AMERAMI (Association pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine maritime et fluvial) acquired it in 2017 The Red Wolf received the label «Boat of Heritage Interest». • Based in Cherbourg in Cotentin, Le Loup Rouge is undergoing permanent maintenance to keep it in excellent condition. The Red Wolf kept a painted wooden boom and tangon (spruce). The standing rigging (guy wires) and running rigging (halyards and eaves) are regularly replaced. • Ocean Racer 37, Le Loup Rouge participates in numerous regattas, cruises and nautical events in the English Channel. South England, East and West Normandy, the Channel Islands and Brittany are his favorite lands.
