About the location

Bibliothèque Centrale de Versailles
5 rue de l'Indépendance américaine 78000 Versailles
  • Yvelines
  • Île-de-France
The municipal library of Versailles has been installed since 1803 in the old buildings of the Hôtel des Affaires Étrangères et de la Marine of Louis XV, built between 1761 and 1763\. As a classified library, it retains significant heritage funds from revolutionary confiscations or donations.
The Foreign Gallery, the ceremonial site of the building, was a landmark of French diplomacy from 1763 to the Revolution. Today a place of conservation of 55,000 ancient works, it offers to the eyes of visitors, throughout its row of five rooms, a beautifully preserved decoration and embellished with a portrait of Louis XV by Charles-André Van Loo, of doors made by Louis-AndréNicolas Van Blarenberghe and panels signed by Jean-Jacques Bachelier.
