A university museum, its history

Louis XV asked Jacques Gondoin, architect, to build the College of Surgery, rue des Cordeliers, today rue de l'École de Médecine. From 1769, an «instrument room» was integrated into his plans. However, it was not until the early 20th century that the question of a museum was seriously discussed. Professor Mouquin, who was appointed to the Chair of the History of Medicine in 1951, really initiated the project with the support of Dean Binet. The museum was initially reserved for professors and students of the Faculty of Medicine and finally opened its doors to the general public in 1994.

A university museum, its collections

These collections, the oldest in Europe, were brought together by the Dean Lafaye in the eighteenth century, then added a set of pieces that covers the different branches of the operative art until the end of the nineteenth century. It includes instruments used in the care of Louis XIV, as well as some rare kits of doctors and surgeons or even instruments of physiology. Today, the Museum of the History of Medicine has found its place among the many Parisian museums and enjoys an international reputation. Access. Metro: Line 4 and 10 (Odeon).
