The museum is housed in a bourgeois house surrounded by a park and located on the ramparts overlooking the Oise valley, on the site of the ancient medieval castle destroyed before the Revolution. The museum pays tribute to the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro who stayed in Pontoise from 1866 to 1883 and attracted many painters, such as Cézanne, Gauguin and Van Gogh.
