The Greek church on Bizet Street is an essential step in the appropriation and adaptation of Byzantine art by French architects and decorators of the second half of the 19th century. The Saint-Stéphane church was built by Guillotin under the direction of the architect Emile Vaudremer, at the expense of Demetrius Stefanovich Schilizzi.
The interior walls of the church were decorated by Charles Lameire and the marble iconostasis by Ludwig Thiersch. Vaudremer called on Léon Avenet to create the stained glass windows. The church, whose foundation stone had been laid in 1890, was inaugurated on Sunday, December 22, 1895, “under the chairmanship of the Archbishop of Heraclea, Monsignor Germanos, before a large crowd where, besides the diplomatic representatives of Greece and Russia and all the notabilities of the Greek colony, many simple friends of Hellenism were noticed”. A sermon was preached on this occasion by the archimandrite Gregory Palamas, who would be the preacher of the church
