Come and discover the new exhibition of the Plans-Reliefs museum!
The massif of the Western Alps seems to impose itself as a natural border between France and Italy. But like any other mountain, they were also lands of passage, exchange or war. The current borders between the two countries are the result of a long history that, from Louis XIV to today, has experienced many twists and turns. The visit will allow to present two plans-reliefs exceptionally out of their reserve: the citadel of Mont-Dauphin (Hautes-Alpes) and the fortress of Fenestrelle (Italy).

Visit in French sign language. Reservation required at pedagogie.plans-reliefs@culture.gouv.fr or by SMS at 06 61 71 11 69

About the location

Musée des Plans-reliefs
Hôtel national des Invalides 75007 Paris
  • Paris
  • Île-de-France
Located on the 4th floor of the courtyard of the Hôtel des Invalides, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs preserves and presents a unique collection in the world: historical models of fortified cities and their surrounding countryside, between the reigns of Louis XIV and Napoleon III, on the same scale (1/600th) and with the same techniques (wood, sand, silk, paper...). These models, tools of military strategy, also constituted an attribute of the prestige of the Heads of State. Today, they are an irreplaceable documentary source on the sites they represent and a valuable educational tool. Through these models (the largest of which reaches 56 m², the visitor discovers a detailed three-dimensional representation of the cities, their buildings, their fortifications and the landscapes in which they fit. You will discover the face of Mont Saint-Michel at the time of Louis XIV or that of Bayonne at the beginning of the 19th century.
