In 1983, the Datcha became a museum, on the initiative of the Association of Friends of Ivan Tourgueniev, Pauline Viardot and Maria Malibran and its creator, Alexandre Zviguilsky, researcher in literature at the CNRS, passionate about the writer, the place and his literary history. In this charming place, in the middle of the woods, next to the house of the Viardot, met great names of literature and arts like Guy de Maupassant, Alexandre Dumas, Alphonse Daudet, Emile Zola, Henry James, Camille Saint-Saëns, Gabriel Fauré, as well as Russian intellectuals.
MUSEUM VISIT
The front door is decorated with grisaille stained glass windows depicting scenes from the famous Memoirs of a Hunter. In 1874, Ivan Touréniev and Pauline Viardot acquired part of a property that belonged to Joséphine de Beauharnais from Bougival. They name it Domaine des Frênes. While the Viardot occupy the beautiful neoclassical villa of 1830 already existing, Ivan Turgenev has a chalet built
