As early as 1878, the director of the Alsatian School noted: "As for gymnastics, we do not need to push our students there. It is an hour of rest for the mind, pleasant for the body and where the calculated diversity of exercises is very likely to make of our children that man wanted of the Ancients in which the maturity of the mind is lodged in an envelope worthy of him (...). The Alsatian School has one of the oldest gymnasiums in a school, the Jean Charcot gymnasium, built in 1880. The opening of the school will allow visitors, guided by students, to discover the sports equipment of a school that played an important role in the development of school sport.
