Chavenay: a village in the wind of history... Its history joins the great history, intermittently, over the centuries. It is splashed by the events that take place on its territory, marks it durably: Construction of its church at the end of the first millennium, passage of the invaders throughout the Middle Ages, devastating Hundred Years War, black plague. The thirteenth century, is a period of renewal and prosperity found, the population increases, the church is embellished. Here is the fifteenth century and new fights, the village again abandoned is repopulated thanks to the inhabitants of Argenteuil to whom are allocated land. A terrier (cadastre) found allows, through a precise description, to identify where they settle and how toponymy is rooted in familiar places. Here, is the house of the winemaker, there, the tavern ,or the place where one comes to pay his royalties, the tithe barn... With the seventeenth it will be the beginnings of Versailles (which is only 10 km) its multiple influences on the life of the villagers: labor of all kinds, maids, nurseries, carriers who extract the stone from the quarries at Terres Bruyères... It is the whole History that passes before our eyes, by small touches. The Dauphin Bridge so named in memory of the dolphin, who, one hunting day, accidentally fell in the ru of Gally... On the way to the "notebook of grievances" and the Revolution ... Great miseries and requisitions, poverty and chaos. The nineteenth and the industrial revolution and Chavenay which, slowly, opens to a new world, and gradually comes out of its autarky.
This is a journey experienced by many other villages around. Ours is marked by the seal of memory for those who come to discover it.
