Victor Garnier, a Provinois who made his fortune in Paris, retired in 1848 to his native city where he acquired a property. Around his villa, he built a landscaped garden that he already opened to the inhabitants. At his death, without heir, he bequeathed this garden to the City to make it a public park while his house became the municipal library (it still houses today the old collection and the archives of the city of Provins). Preserved almost intact, the Jardin Garnier bears witness to the art of gardens in the 19th century and the taste for exotic species: purple beech, catalpa and royal ginko harmoniously rub shoulders with hazelnut and yew. The remains of the lost monuments of Provins punctuate the visit and accentuate the romantic aspect of the garden. This one, with its statues of the great men of the city, is the flowery memory.
