The Heritage Foundation is the leading donor of heritage in France and its mission is to promote knowledge, conservation, identification, preservation and enhancement of heritage, public or private, protected as historical monuments or not, proximity or national or international interest. Since its creation in 1996, it has supported more than 35,000 restoration projects across the country. The Heritage Foundation and the National Archives have launched a collection of donations, open to all, for the restoration of the cardinals' lounges and their remarkable 18th century decorations, at the Hotel de Rohan.

Created at the time of the French Revolution, the National Archives collect, preserve and enhance the central archives of the State. Nearly 300 linear kilometres of archives, from the 7th century to the present day, are preserved. They are now located on three sites: Fontainebleau, Paris and Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, the latter being open to the public since January 2013\. The Pierrefitte-sur-Seine site, designed by architect Massimiliano Fuksas, is dedicated to the archives after the French Revolution; it houses nearly 180 linear kilometres of public and private archives accessible in the reading room.
