The Menagerie, opened in 1794, developed throughout the 19th century: among the animals that inhabited it at that time were a number of felines - tigers, lions and jaguars. Objects of study for naturalists of this period, they are also the subjects of artistic compositions of the draughtsmen, painters and sculptors who frequent the Jardin des Plantes, as can be witnessed by the iconographic collections of the libraries of the Museum.
