About the location

Église Saint-Sulpice
Place Saint-Sulpice 75006 Paris
  • Paris
  • Île-de-France
Emblematic element of the fast urbanization of the rural territory having surrounded the abbey of Saint German, just called Meadows ". The largest church of Paris and one of the most famous. Built from 1646 in the location of a small medieval sanctuary at the instigation of Jean-Jacques Olier, friend of Vincent de Paul, master(teacher) of the French School of spirituality, founder of seminary(seminar) and of the Company of the priests of Saint-Sulpice. Splendid classic architecture starting again especially, for the inside, the plans of Daniel Gittard, dated of 1660, and for the facade, later, those of Servandoni and of Chalgrin (tower of left, the highest of Paris before the incomplete Eiffel Tower, the other remainder). Many notable works of art, especially the sculptures of several major artists of the XVIIIth century, paintings(paints) of the XVIIth century and of the XIXth centuries (Christmas Hallé, J.B. Pierre, Delacroix...) . Beautiful examples of decorative art (woodworks, golden bronze, decoration(set) of the chapel of the Virgin(Virgo)). Organs of renowned Cavaillé-Coll. Curious astronomic gnomon.
