The current Lycée Polyvalent Thibaut de Champagne occupies the buildings of the former palace of the Counts of Champagne.
Provins High School is a place steeped in history. Tombs uncovered during the 1960s reveal a Merovingian presence. The discovery on this occasion of a seventh-century buckle plate decorated with silver filigrees, since deposited in the museum, represents the oldest historical trace concerning Provins. A fortified building had to occupy the rocky spur quite early, as the lower room of the chapel, dating from the 11th century, attests, however it was not until 1161 that the palace was mentioned in an act by the count of Champagne Henri the Liberal (that is, the generous one).
In the 12th century, Provins occupied one of the first commercial places in Europe, thanks to the Champagne fairs established under the protection of the counts. Henri the Liberal, one of the greatest lords of the kingdom, built a palace whose magnificence contrasts with the austere military cons
