Of Portuguese origin, Vasco Martins had fled the Salazar regime in the 1970s and settled in France. After a few university studies, he had worked as a language facilitator, particularly at Renault Billancourt, when the company’s management had created, under union pressure, an Introduction to the French Language service. This service was aimed at the more and more numerous Specialized Workers of foreign origin who provided the automobile manufacturing. During the conference, Vasco Martins will talk about this important mission that allowed foreign employees to acquire mastery of the language, in the hope of obtaining a real job and eventually to integrate the French society.
