1 Rue du Musée, 60000 Beauvais, France
Former episcopal palace, residence of the bishops of Beauvais, counts of the city and peers of France, architectural ensemble built at the foot of the cathedral of Beauvais in the 12th century by Henri de France, brother of the king. It was built on the Roman rampart. In the 14th century, to assert his authority following a riot of the inhabitants of the city, Bishop Simon de Clermont-Nesle erected a fortified entrance equipped with two towers. Two centuries later, the main residence was rebuilt by Bishop Louis Villiers de l'Isle Adam in a Renaissance spirit while retaining a characteristic Gothic decoration. Its facade is adorned with a staircase tower named 'clock tower' surmounted by a bell tower housing three bells, one of which dates from 1506\. In the attic, the majestic and imposing oak frame 14 meters high is one of the most spectacular elements of the ancient bishopric. After the Revolution, the palace received several assignments: prefecture in 1800, new bishop in 1822, then Courthouse in 1846\. In 1973, the judicial administration leaves the palace and makes way for the museum’s collections.
