About the location

Abbaye Saint-Rémi de Laval-Dieu
Place Hubert Gobert, 08800 Monthermé
  • Ardennes
  • Grand Est
In the 12th century, the Count of Rethel, Ithier, founded several abbeys on the lands that belonged to him. The church of Monthermé was built in 1128 with the support of Archbishop Renauld de Martigné at the place called Vallis Dei (the Valley of God) and was intended for regular canons of the order of Premonstratee, under the name of Saint-Remi.
The abbey was attached to France in 1629 with the sovereignty of Château-Regnault. In 1696, the church was damaged by a voluntary fire caused by elements of the Maastricht garrison. The western façade of the building was repaired three years later in a Flemish Baroque style of brick and yellow stone from Dom-le-Mesnil. The church has frescoes, woodwork and carved stalls dating from 1699\. The community was dissolved during the French Revolution and the property sold in 1791.
