About the location

Gros Ouvrage Maginot du Hackenberg

The Hackenberg is a fortification part of the Maginot Line. It is a large artillery structure, composed of a total of nineteen blocks on the surface, connected to each other by kilometers of underground galleries. Built between 1929 and 1935, it was spared the fighting of June 1940, before being reused by the Germans and served in the fighting of November 1944 against American troops. Repaired at the beginning of the Cold War, it is now a museum. It is one of the most powerful works of the Maginot line: only the work of the Hochwald in northern Alsace is comparable to it. In an underground universe, the period installations are presented in working order, from the ammunition store to the power station, through the barracks with its kitchens and infirmary reconstituted identically. An exit on the top of the structure allows to observe a turret in operation.
