Built between 1898 and 1914, this imposing monument of 18m by 10, of neo-Byzantine style is the fruit of the will of a woman, Marie-Théodorine, Zoé Promsy, following the death of her husband, Jean-Marie, Léon Faynot, in 1896\. Immensely rich, as the sole heir to the biggest fortune in Burgundy, this desperate woman, without children, decided to dedicate her to the building of a tomb worthy of the great love that united her with her husband. Some do not hesitate today to compare it to the Indian Taj Mahal. For this, she chose the greatest French artists of the time: the architect, second grand prize of Rome Octave Courtois-Suffi, the painter-decorator Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse and the sculptor Gustave Michel. Inspired by the mausoleum of Galla Placida of Ravenna, they created a masterpiece entirely covered with the rarest and most beautiful marble and mosaic.
