Max Ernst (1891-1976), a German painter, sculptor and poet, is a major figure in 20th century art, the Dada and Surrealist movements. With his wife, the American artist Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012), he left the United States and joined Paris in 1952\. Max Ernst receives the grand prize at the Venice Biennale in 1954 and finds a peaceful life in Touraine until 1968\. In 1955, the winemaker’s farm was transformed: the farmhouse and the barn house the couple and their respective workshops. All the spaces for painting, drawing and sculpting are occupied. Today, the painting workshop and the art gallery host temporary exhibitions and conferences. The floor, with its beautiful framework, is devoted to the documentation center dedicated to artists. A large garden extends the buildings: Max and Dorothea designed and planted it in 1959; a greenhouse and multiple species testify to the couple’s interest in nature.
