As part of its consulting missions, CAUE 37 accompanied the Ile Bouchard Town Hall (project owner) in the restoration project of the Saint-Gilles church. Indeed, the critical condition of the roofs requires a work operation. The coverage of the lower side is ruined and an area is covered since 2016. The structures of the nave and the lower side suffered infiltrations and locally present disorders affecting their stability.
Martine Ramat, heritage architect, project manager for this operation, follows the work that began in May 2023 and will last about a year. They concern the nave, the north aisle and the north chapel and consist of:

the total rehabilitation of slate roofs
the restoration of the structures and consolidation of the nave structure
the restoration of stone structures in high sections in connection with roofs
repair of the plasters of the gutter wall to the north of the nave and the west return of the north transept
the restoration of the stained glass windows of the north-facing nave
Thanks to our 3 speakers, this guided tour will allow you to discover the history of this church whose first stone was laid in 1067 (M of Laforcade), to understand the stakes of the safeguard of the Historical Monuments (M Darras) and enter this heritage site being restored (Ms. Ramat).

The Gilles Church of L'Ile-Bouchard was built in 1067\. At the beginning of the 12th century, the church was enlarged with the addition of a lower side to the north. After the construction at the beginning of the fifteenth century of a chapel on the north side, the choir and the bedside are replaced at the end of the fifteenth century by a large choir with flat bedside. Between 1868 and 1870 an important restoration campaign was carried out; it modified the arcades of the nave on the north side, restored the high Romanesque bays and condemned the semicircular windows of the north wall on the lower side. New brick and plaster vaults were also built above the nave, which had previously been built. Between 1870 and 1880, work continued on the interior elevations with the use of so-called "stone-cut" coatings. No major changes have been made to the building since the great 19th century construction. The church of Saint-Gilles was declared a Historical Monument in 1908
