The Monastery was founded in 1001 by Baron de Preuilly Effroy and his wife Beatrix d'Issoudun. The current Saint-Pierre abbey was built in the 1140s on a vast Benedictine plan: nave, aisles, transept, chevet surrounded by its ambulatory with radiant chapels. The bold party of an architecture called "in the market" gives a very airy and luminous internal volume. The monument is also remarkable for the richness and profusion of the capitals, many of which are authentic and of great finesse. Also noteworthy are the elegant transept stands. The important restoration campaign of the nineteenth century marked the monument without altering its overall beauty, it is particularly visible on the bedside and with the tower of the bell tower, rebuilt following its collapse in 1867, and surmounted by an incongruous arrow covered with glazed tiles.
