About the location

The first station in Chartres was created in 1849\. The building was built on a first class railway station model, quite large, with a main building body and two side pavilions. The station was rebuilt five times from 1870.
The current building, dating from 1933, was commissioned by Raoul Dautry the director general of the state railway administration to architect Henri Pacon. The latter destroys part of the buildings while keeping the structure of the original load-bearing walls. It widens the station on the square and elevates the main building, in a finishing Art Deco style.
In the mid-1980s, renovations were carried out inside with the «Star Trekien» mesh ceiling. This operation broke the initial volume wanted by Henri Pacon. For thirty years, the building has hardly undergone any modifications.
In 2018, the new station hall was inaugurated.
