About the location

Forteresse de Montrond
10 Allée du Prince-de-Condé 18200 Saint-Amand-Montrond
  • Cher
  • Centre-Val de Loire
The origins of the fortress of Montrond date back to at least the thirteenth century. Extended in the fifteenth century by Charles d'Albret, it became a sumptuous residence and powerfully defended during the first half of the seventeenth century, after the work of the duke of Sully and Henri II of Bourbon-Condé. The military engineer Jean Sarrazin endowed Montrond with a particularly complex bastioned fortification system, a unique example in central France. But during the "Fronde des Princes", eleven months of siege will defeat the fortress, despite its powerful crown of bastions and underground communication galleries. Gradually abandoned, until sinking into an almost total oblivion in the nineteenth century, the monument will again know an extraordinary destiny thanks to the fascinating history of its rediscovery and restoration. After 40 years of volunteer work, Montrond continues to reveal its secrets.

Access
Reception in front of the premises of the Association, Allée du prince de Condé- parking in front- easy access from the city- but the site itself is hilly (many stairs and slopes)- the visit to the fortress is not well suited for people with walking difficulties.
