About the location

Abbaye royale Saint-Michel
Bois-Aubry 37120 Luzé
  • Indre-et-Loire
  • Centre-Val de Loire
Masterpiece of heritage, the royal Abbey Saint-Michel of Wood-Aubry (historical monument listed(classified) by the XIIth century) is famous for its Romance architecture (XIIth century) and Gothic (XIVth and XVth centuries), for its cloister and its chapter house (capitals(big tops), shell(misprint) of Santiago de Compostela, column of the IIIth century) its bell tower and its stone arrow, its rood screen, its room with echo, its massive fortifications, its animated history(story) (Louis XI, Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany), and finally, for its cemetery where rest(base) ashes of the Hollywood actor Yul Brynner (7 Mercenaries, 10 commands, Anna and the King, Taras Bulba, Anastasia, Salomon and the Queen of Sheba, etc.) . Located in a romantic executive(frame), the abbey is a rich historic witness(baton) of the passage of ideal érémitique (oratory devoted to Saint-Michel based(established) by 1110-1120 by the hermit Robert) in spirit cénobitique (Charter of foundation of the Abbey dating of 1138 ratified by the Lord Brice du Chillou), as well as of the organisation of the previous monastic life. At once subjected(submitted) to the authority of saint Bernard of Abbeville (Abbey of Sainte-Trinité-de-Tiron / tironien Order) and with a ruler of saint Benoît, evoked in Cartulaires by the popes Eugene III and Alexandre III, the abbey of Wood-Aubry conquered its royal letters under the crowns of Louis XI and of Charles VIII who participated in its restoration(catering). Charles de Ronsard (brother of poet) was abbot there in 1544\. Finally, if the abbey was many times manhandled over the centuries (Hundred Years' War, brigandage, Wars of religion, French Revolution, etc.) she(it) was very fortunately listed(classified) in conformance with(for) monument history in 1944.
