It was on the Gallo-Roman village of Epponiacus, located along the famous Via Agrippa leading from Lyon to Boulogne-sur-Mer, that according to tradition, the domain of the Germain family was located. The great saint, bishop of Auxerre from 418 to 448, was born there around 385\. His successors were the lords of Appoigny until the Revolution. One of them, Guillaume de Seignelay, founded the church of St Peter between 1207 and 1220 at the beginning of the thirteenth century and endowed it with a college, that is to say a community of canons. The building has important similarities in style with the choir of the cathedral of Auxerre, which was built in the same years, around 1215, by the same bishop. Saint-Pierre d'Appoigny was built in a single stream and is a magnificent example of classical Gothic, with the exception of the high parts of the bell tower, built in the 16th century and the north chapel built in the 17th century.
