About the location

Église de Sézéria
1 rue de la Chapelle 39270 Orgelet
  • Jura
  • Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
Set back from the village of Sézéria (Hamlet of Orgelet) in the plain of the Thoreigne, this church attracts the gaze of the walker taking the hiking path passing at the foot of its wall. Mentioned as early as 930, the parish of Sézéria included several villages of the surrounding plain. Built in the late 15th-early 16th centuries on Romanesque foundations, it contains bases of Merovingian walls. This archaeological wealth allows this building to enjoy the first Bern background. In ruins for many years, the bell tower was first restored in 1986\. The entire site was classified as a remarkable ruin in 1998\. Covered by vegetation, it was eventually forgotten by humans. The municipality of Orgelet, owner of the site, has started since 2021 an important restoration program under the aegis of the Historic Monuments. An active team of volunteers has already done a very important job that has brought it back into focus.
