Based(Established) under Charlemagne's reign in years 800 by Barnard, high-ranking serviceman, the Abbey of Ambronay is attached with a ruler of saint Benoît. In the XIth century the Abbey enjoys a complete sovereignty by papal privilege, depending as well as Rome. The Abbey beams and possesses an important territory including 44 parishes, 21 priories and 9 deanships(comices). His monks become the administrators(directors) of a more and more rich fief and his territory attracts greeds of the high neighbouring dignitaries. Placed at the heart of border fights between Dauphiné and Savoy, the Abbey must defend(forbid) itself. The "castle" is then built, a main building was flanked(thrown) by two tours(towers, ballots) in the surrounding wall(speaker) of the Abbey. To live more serenely, in 1282, the abbot Jean of Balm chooses to put itself under the protection of the Count de Savoie. The monks will be able so to dedicate themselves only to prayer in strict observance of the Rule(Ruler). In the course of time(weather) and with the arrival of the commendataires abbots, the monks take some liberties from the XVIth century. They will abandon life principles, for example, in community by building their own houses annexed to the Abbey with horses and servants... In 1652, the Abbey of Ambronay is attached to the Congregation of the Benedictines de Saint-Maur. Taking up with monastic life, the monks mauristes renovate and transform buildings(ships), gather(combine) archives, build a library(bookcase). In Revolution, the civil Constitution of the Clergy announces that the religious communities having neither vocation of education or of charity are declared as being useless. She(It) will find her(its) function(office) of parish church at the end of Revolution.
