Discover the school of architecture throughout its history
Established since its creation (1971) in an old rubanerie, overlooking the Place Jacquard, in the heart of the city, the school of architecture is in direct contact with social and urban life. This old textile recipe merchant building that belonged to the Louison family was built between 1857 and 1864.
The city of Saint-Étienne bought the primitive building in 1971 to install the school of municipal architecture transformed by decree into a pedagogical unit of architecture on July 24, 1972 and then as a school of architecture in 1984.
In 2005, the National School of Architecture of Saint-Étienne (ENSASE) is the subject of an extension renovation project led by the architect François Bouchaudy, whose main challenge is to give this real estate complex an architectural identity consistent with the history of the place and its function as a school of architecture.
In 2022, the ENSASE is undergoing an energy renovation as part of the Recovery Plan deployed by the Government, with on the one hand, the strengthening of the thermal insulation of the architectural workshops and a technical renovation (replacement of air handling units and installation of a heat pump).
Students from the School of Architecture will welcome and guide visitors as they explore this place of learning and building architecture.
