Free visit of the church of Lubilhac
Free visit on Saturday 16 September 2023 from 10.30am to 5pm of the church of Lubilhac, built before 1179, which is one of the last three jewels of Romanesque art of the region of Privas, and a unique monument in the Vivarais. It has been listed as a historic monument since 2012.
The church of Lubilhac, a high heritage place located above the Ouvèze river, also values contemporary creation through exceptional works by Gérard Garouste, Antoine Poncet and Thomas Houseago.
In 2002, Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière, member of the Académie des beaux-arts, honorary president of the Fondation Culture & Diversité and president of the Association pour le rayonnement de la Grotte Chauvet - Pont-d'Arc, wanted to start the restoration of this family and historical heritage, which was completed in 2010.
This project was entrusted to companions, including a master sculptor and a master glassmaker. In addition, ancient techniques, based on local sources, have been used on this preserved site. It was also decided to plant on the site a thousand-year-old olive tree, which dates from the construction of the church, surrounded by more than 380 olive trees, in the continuity of the olive groves surrounding the monasteries and abbeys of the southern Ardèche from the Middle Ages.
Finally, this restoration was accompanied by a desire to enhance contemporary creation in Lubilhac, thanks to exceptional works:
- Stained glass windows by Gérard Garouste, one of the greatest French painters, whose works are regularly exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne in Los Angeles, or at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, which dedicated a retrospective to him in 2008 and 2022.
- A sculpture by Antoine Poncet, member of the Academy of Fine Arts, specialist in patinated bronzes and marbles, whose work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France and around the world.
- A sculpture by Thomas Houseago, one of the greatest contemporary sculptors of international renown, who works on the human figure and whose works are installed or exhibited in London, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Brussels.
- A sculpture by Etienne Martin, one of the greatest French sculptors of the 20th century, whose work is placed under the sign of experimentation, making the use especially of materials a priori distant from the world of sculpture.
