Founded in the 19th century, when the Dombes was still quite marshy, the abbey by the work of its monks helped to change the landscape and to clean up this region of Ain. It was Cistercians from the community of Aiguebelle in the Drôme who then settled and cleared, dried, developed the lands that had been entrusted to them. This agricultural work continues to this day, when the Chemin Neuf Community is now established in the venerable walls. The production of milk and cheese, beef meat, honey and apples, the work of men continues to value the local wealth. And visitors do not fail to enjoy it at the shop! Visits, meetings and spirituality
The Abbey of Notre Dame des Dombes is visited all year round and is also home to religious activities that make it an important meeting place. We discover in the church a wall of contemporary icons that were made by the workshop that produces and teaches this art as well as that of the mosaic. It is also the place to attend courses and conferences in philosophy, theology or history. In short, a place full of wisdom to sit back and take a step back from the world…
