Evening of the observatory of Lyon

What do we do at the observatory? What can we see with a telescope? Can we see anything other than stars in the sky? Why does the Big Dipper look like a pan?

What do we do at the observatory? What can we see with a telescope? Can we see anything but stars in the sky? Why does the Big Dipper look like a pot?
The Lyon Observatory offers the public an astronomical evening. It will begin at nightfall with two conferences to choose from: one given by a researcher from the Centre de recherche astrophysique de Lyon on light pollution and its impacts; the other for beginners who can discover what can be observed in the night sky. Then, depending on the cloud cover, visitors can observe the stars using the instruments of the observatory and the Astronomical Society of Lyon or (if the weather is cloudy) make a historical and scientific visit of the observatory and participate in workshops. Animations are also offered to children, regardless of the cloud cover.
In case of very bad weather, the evening can be cancelled.

Observatoireastronomique of Lyons, based(established) in 1878, is located on the hill of Saint-Genis-Laval. It is one of the 9 French monitoring centres(observatories). Endowed with 21 buildings(ships) and more than 40 instruments listed(classified) or registered in conformance with(for) historic monuments, it is at the heart of a four hectare park, rich in 500 trees and shrubs. This place steeped in history shelters from now on an unique(only) instrument: the bent equatorial glasses. Indeed, on seven copies built in world, that of Lyons is the only one to work still in her home state. Currently, the Monitoring centre(Observatory) of Lyons shelters the Research centre in Astrophysics of Lyons, research laboratory under the supervision of the University Claude Bernard Lyon 1, of the NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH and of ENS. This one alloys cutting-edge research in astrophysics and scientific heritage.
