The discovery of a rhinoceros diacérathérium gannatense
Pentecost was discovered, in the lime quarry, located on the Mont Libre, in Gannat, on the day of Pentecost, in 1993, it dates from twenty three million years. It was not the first rhino bones discovered at the site. But the specimen discovered by François Escuillé is almost complete. Its presence is explained by the formation of a large lake, coupled with a tropical climate, creating favorable conditions for the emergence of a varied fauna and flora. The skeleton and its cast have been on display at the Yves Machelon Municipal Museum since 1994. The same year, his discovery is at the origin of the creation of the association and the showroom of Rhinopolis as well as the implantation of Paléopolis in 2013. 30 years after its discovery, the museum has renovated the room dedicated to it. On the occasion of the heritage days, let François Escuillé tell you his discovery. You will also have the opportunity to admire a dinosaur loaned by the Eldonia company in the back yard of the museum.
