S. Piotrovitch d'Orlik

Do you know the Chapel of the Hôtel-Dieu? Its history? Its works? Discover them in the open-access chapel through an exhibition of panels that accompany this exceptional hospital building. The chapel of the Hôtel-Dieu is a hospital chapel built in the 17th century with the hospital of Quatre-Rangs, and restored in the 19th century. In the 21st century, the restoration undertaken by the HCL rediscovers an exceptional hospital heritage.
A century and a half of progressive oblivion had made disappear the interest and the richness of the works and the painted decoration, which the restoration begun by the Hospices Civils de Lyon in 2012 makes it possible to rediscover."

About the location

Chapelle de l'Hôtel-Dieu (HCL)
1 place de l'Hôpital, 69002 Lyon

Built in the seventeenth century and reorganized in the nineteenth century, the Chapel of the Hotel-Dieu, with the Counter-Reformation architecture adapted to the hospital, is entirely decorated in neo-baroque trompe-l'oeil. Since 2012, a major restoration has made it possible to recover the brilliance of three side chapels (chapels of the Virgin, baptismal font and St Joseph), the Virgin of Mimerel, the pulpit, and all the paintings and stained glass windows. In the baptismal font of this hospitaller chapel more than 40,000 children were baptized in 1945 and 1975\. Still dedicated to worship, it also regularly hosts cultural activities. From 2018, after the reconversion work of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu, the chapel will adjoin the entrance of this emblematic architectural complex that will hold an important place in the new heritage center of Lyon.
