Planted Wood for the Shade

Ravaged by storms and waves, it remains a jumble of small dunes overgrown with vegetation, and the debris of what made it the fence: pickets connected by shreds of wire, and old railway ties, planted in the sandy soil. All ravaged, worn, scraped, filed, broken by the addition of three frequently joint violence here: those of the sea, the wind, and the sun. We imagine that these planted woods are like steles, each recalling a name or names, among those of the characters of the Aeneid.
