About the location

Église Saint-Oradoux
Place de l'Église, 23190 Lupersat
  • Creuse
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The construction of the church of Lupersat was launched in the eleventh century. Dedicated to Saint Oradoux (Saint Martyr whose relics are preserved in the church) it is of classical Romanesque style in Latin cross. A few centuries later (1288) it will be the seat of the archpriest of Combraille.
Located about twenty kilometers from Aubusson, it presents a very special silhouette in the Creuse landscape by its strange bulbous arrow (unique in the department) which stands at the top of the bell tower of the crossing. The high roof of its nave houses a sober architecture, with carved capitals peculiar enough for the daring truculence of the characters (45 capitals historiated). It also houses a 17th-century altarpiece.
The lightning damaged the building at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the repairs carried out gave it its current appearance. In the seventeenth century, the Duchess of Montpensier, wife of the brother of Louis XIII, had some transformations carried out as evidence
