Musée des Beaux-Arts
15 boulevard Camille Pelletan, 11000 Carcassonne
Located in the former Presidium, open on the boulevards planted with plane trees of the lower town, the Museum of Fine Arts offers a refuge with sensitive charm, counterpoint to the grandiose silhouette of the medieval city.
A fine example of pedagogical and scientific generosity, it was in 1845 that the Société des Arts et Sciences offered the city of Carcassonne a collection of 102 paintings for its museum. A Commission on Arts and Sciences was founded in 1836 with the purpose of “… to research, to preserve with care and to classify, in a public deposit, all that belongs to the antiquities and the history of the country...”. Subsequently, in addition to the deposits of the Musée du Louvre and the State, the donations of generous Carcassonnais continued to enrich the collections, including donations and bequests: Courtejaire (1876, 1880 and 1884), Coste-Reboulh (1892), Chénier and Raynaud (1893), and finally in the 20th century Delteil (1984), Pla (1990) and Cahuzac (1995). Since 1985
