Temple de Saint-Jean-du-Gard
Place Carnot, 30270 Saint-Jean-du-Gard
At first, the Reformed community of Saint-Jean-du-Gard gathered in a private property, near the Place d'Armes, called «the Pavilion». In the sixteenth century, Protestants were in the majority in the village.
The village church was destroyed at that time, and its stones were used to build a temple. In 1562, the first temple was built in Saint-Jean-du-Gard. Rectangular in shape, it rises on the square between the castle and the house of three gables.
Following the revocation of the edict of Nantes, it is destroyed, and the stones are reused for the construction of the Catholic church in 1686\.
It was not until April 1827 that Saint-Jean-du-Gard again had a temple in the village. Built in a neo-classical style, it was designed by Alès architect M. Renoux.
