On Place Métropole is the Saint-François-de-Sales Cathedral of Chambéry. It is originally the church of a Franciscan convent. It did not become a cathedral until 1779, during the reign of the kings of Piedmont-Sardinia. Built in a homogeneous Gothic style, it is a fairly large building but without pomp, austerity Franciscan obliges. It was at the beginning of the 19th century that the vast frescoes of Gothic replacements were created, which constitute the largest trompe l'oeil decoration in Europe.
