Open Doors of the Museum! Travel back in time to learn more about the lives of our ancestors
Discover the cultures, civilizations and lifestyles of the past at the Museum of Regional Prehistory.
The European Heritage Days are an opportunity to have free access to the Museum of Regional Prehistory.
The Neolithic furniture unearthed in the caves of the territory of Minervois au Caroux tells the story of Saintponian civilization, its stone architecture and its daily life.
The visit is a global approach to regional prehistory that addresses a chronological context, the migrations of populations, their
first artistic representations and the interaction of man and his environment.
Using objects found on archaeological sites, the display cases of the exhibition room present maps, plans, models. A playful area is available to the young public.
This prehistoric people is at the origin of the statues-menhirs, which one finds erected in the mountains of the Haut-Languedoc. Menhir statues are distinguished from other megaliths by their anthropomorphic features, engraved or sculpted from stone, as well as by the
representation of recognizable attributes and objects.
These megaliths are the oldest in Europe, these large carved or engraved raised stones can be planted alone, aligned with others or form a set of monuments.
An exhibition of reproductions in the menhir-statues room invites reflection. Do they represent a character? Do they evoke a leader, a warrior, a hunter? A mother goddess?
