The Opinel knife was invented in 1890 by Joseph Opinel (1872-1960) in the small hamlet of Gévoudaz a few kilometres from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. Today, this small pocket knife, which still bears his name, has become a real French heritage object!
Located in a former Opinel factory, the Opinel Museum dedicates nearly 700m2 to the history and manufacturing process of the famous Savoyard knife. Old manufacturing machines have remained in place in the original forge and are an element of the permanent exhibition, as is a filmed presentation of the current workshops in Chambéry.
