Conditions
Free temporary exhibition

This temporary exhibition accompanies the opening of the heritage route, La Route de l'Opinel. This 16 km discovery route allows visitors to explore the history of the Opinel® knife in the Opinel cradle. But the temporary exhibition goes even further!
The history and evolution of the Opinel Road will be presented, from its design, to the recent installation of Opinel-inspired art buildings and archaeological excavations of historic sites, to major development work in 2021. Visitors will also have the opportunity to study the various objects found within the historic sites and to see usually inaccessible places, such as the underground canals of the first factory and the interior of Joseph Opinel’s house, founder of the Opinel brand!
The exhibition will take place in the magnificent setting of the Former Bishop (250m from the Opinel Museum).

About the location

Cour de l'ancien évéché

Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne is located in the heart of the Maurienne Valley, the southernmost of the large transversal valleys of the Savoie. Long before the big industry made the valley one of the high places of aluminum production, there are a host of small trades. Joseph Opinel creates the famous knife now known worldwide. Don’t forget Dr.Fodéré, considered the father of forensic medicine and the great couturier Pierre Balmain who spent all his childhood in Maurienne.
An obligatory crossing between France and Italy, at the foot of the biggest alpine passes, the Sybelles area and the Vanoise park, Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne has more than one asset to seduce lovers of nature and sport. Passage of the most famous cycling races such as the Tour de France or the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, it is a privileged starting point to reach the passes of the Croix-de-Fer, the Télégraphe, the Galibier, the Glandon, and the Madeleine, which is affirmed by its slogan «world capital of cyclo-climbers».
