About the location

Fort de l'île Madame
Île Madame, 17730 Port-des-Barques
  • Charente-Maritime
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Isle Madame, the smallest of the Charente islands, is accessible at low tide by a sandy and pebble road. A listed natural site, it has an exceptional natural and cultural heritage in terms of fauna, flora and history.
The fort of Madame Island was built in 1704 to defend the arsenal of Rochefort. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the redoubt of the engineer Rousselot, square of 36m of side, crowns the summit of the island opposite Fort Vauban in Fouras. In the middle of the 19th century, the addition of a defensive barracks for 250 men on the south-eastern face of the fort and the construction of a battery oriented towards the harbour of Aix Island completed the defence of Madame Island.
The three casemates host exhibits on the fauna, flora, fishing on foot, geology and history of the Isle Madame.
The fort now belongs to the Conservatoire du Littoral.
