The old Quaker house and its cemetery are located in the village of Congénies, in Languedoc (southern France), about twenty kilometres from Nîmes and Montpellier. From the beginning of the 17th century, Congenies and the surrounding villages brought together a community of locally designated pacifist Protestant men and women called «Couflares» (Inspired). The house of assembly of Congénies was built in 1822, using funds provided by English and American Friends. The Assembly counted up to 200 large families, over a vast area, throughout the 19th century. Then she declined, after the departure of her young men, forced to expatriate to avoid compulsory military service. The young women of the community married Protestants and the Quakers were reabsorbed into the Protestant community.
The last service took place in 1905\. The house was then sold in 1907\. It was used in various ways at the beginning of the 20th century, before being renamed Quaker villa and converted into a private residen
