Discover the castle of the Authon lineage
This guided tour of the castle of Authon Ébéon, located in the heart of the Charente-Maritime, takes you on a journey through history.
The Authon lineage, whose châtellenie is attested from the twelfth century, is affirmed during the Middle Ages as one of the most influential families of Saintonge. The seigneurial home was raised in 1607 by Seguin d'Authon, king’s adviser and seneschal of Saintonge, while the family of Authon was at its peak, its authority extending to the island of Oléron.
The castle is built on a terrace surrounded by moats fed with water by a diversion of the river Dandelot. It has been the object of numerous destructions and restorations and it is Marcelin Normand d'Authon who is at the origin of the most striking transformations. The Graveline tower and the entrance door to the seigneurial residence were added to the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments in 1972. The surroundings of the castle and the Guignebourg mill were then classified by the Ministry of the Environment in 1993.
Inside, you will not fail to discover the 16th century tower, ancient horse-drawn carriages. Outside, you will discover an English-style park, a French courtyard and the rose garden.
