Marseille is the only city in France, with Paris, where you can visit a museum dedicated to the arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas (north and south). MAAOA offers a rich collection of art objects, both cultural witnesses and works in their own right, from civilizations whose art has been neglected for too long, or even ignored. The 20th century was the framework for a double recognition of these objects, both by the scientists who documented them, and by the artists proclaiming the contribution of these arts in their reflections and experiments of new forms. Enlightened collectors joined these two tracks.
